AMFI Registration Number (ARN) is a unique identifier issued by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) to individuals and entities who have qualified the NISM-Series-V-A Mutual Fund Distributors certification and are authorised to distribute mutual fund schemes in India — the credential that defines a Mutual Fund Distributor (MFD).

Definition

AMFI assigns ARNs under the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations 1996 framework, as the self-regulatory body for mutual fund distribution in India. An ARN is alphanumeric (e.g., ARN-314872 for MintByte) and is valid for 3 years from issue date, after which it must be renewed. Renewal requires evidence of continuing professional education (CPE) credits — a minimum number of AMFI-accredited CPE hours per renewal cycle. ARN holders who fail to renew lapse into an inactive state and cannot conduct distribution business until reinstated with a fresh NISM certification if the lapse exceeds a threshold period.

Every mutual fund transaction by an investor — purchase, switch, SIP registration, redemption through a distributor — carries the ARN of the facilitating MFD in the transaction record. AMCs use the ARN to credit trail commission to the correct distributor's account monthly. The ARN is also disclosed in all marketing materials and investor-facing communications (as seen in the disclosure footer of all MintByte content). AMFI maintains a searchable public register of all active ARN holders at amfiindia.com — investors can verify their distributor's registration status before transacting.

Why it matters for investors

The ARN system provides investor protection by ensuring that only SEBI/AMFI-qualified intermediaries can distribute mutual funds. An investor transacting through a valid ARN-holder has recourse: AMFI has a complaint mechanism (SCORES portal integration) for distributor-related grievances, and unethical MFD behaviour can result in ARN cancellation. MFDs are required to quote their ARN at the point of sale and in all investor communications — absence of an ARN in marketing material is a red flag for unregistered distribution activity.

ARN also defines the scope of services: ARN holders can facilitate regular-plan investments and earn trail commission but cannot charge planning fees or provide written financial plans for a fee (that requires separate SEBI fee-advisor registration). Investors who wish to receive fee-based financial planning must work with a separately licensed intermediary — a different, separately regulated category. MintByte (ARN-314872) operates as a distributor under AMFI regulations.

Worked example

Scenario: Investor Priya wants to verify MintByte's distributor credentials before opening a mutual fund folio.

Verification steps:

  • Step 1: Visit amfiindia.com → "Know Your MFD" → enter ARN-314872
  • Step 2: AMFI database returns: Name — MintByte Wealth Pvt. Ltd.; Status — Active; Validity — [current expiry date]; Empanelled AMCs — all major AMCs listed
  • Step 3: Cross-check APMI APRN-01658 on the APMI portal for the portfolio management registration
  • Result: Credentials verified — Priya can proceed with account opening under ARN-314872
